The Angel of the North in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear
One of the most recognisable symbols of the North East, the Angel of North has been welcoming visitors to Gateshead for 20 years. The iconic landmark was designed by renowned sculptor Sir Antony Gormley, who used a plaster cast of his own body as the basis for the steel sculpture. But the Angel's body is a bit bigger than that of its creator. The height of four double decker buses with a wingspan wider than a Boeing 757 jet, it is believed to be the largest angel sculpture in the world.
