The three watchtowers
The Three Peaks of Lavaredo offer a little something for everybody—spectacular views for the hikers (and, of course, photographers) who view them from afar, challenging routes for mountaineers who've been climbing these peaks for 150 years and plenty of history for military buffs. The three Dolomitic pinnacles acted as makeshift watchtowers during World War I, straddling Italy's border with its then-opponent Austria-Hungary. The high-altitude battles of the Italian Alps came to be called the White War due to their intense winter conditions. Remnants of the bitter skirmishes, including trenches and tunnels, are scattered in the shadows of this timeless mountain trio.
