For the Ōhau River, this spot marks the end of the line. Or more accurately, the end of multiple lines. The Ōhau is one of New Zealand's many braided rivers, in which several crisscrossing streams course over a wide, flat riverbed. Such twisting flows appear all over the Mackenzie Basin, a vast area in the middle of the South Island. Here, the Ōhau merges into a single flow as it reaches the artificial Lake Benmore, then makes one final split into a familiar delta shape, its silty sediment dissipating into the aquamarine deep.
