Peace in the park
The Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Realm may be in Germany, but its 18th-century design follows the English model that was trendy at the time: a mix of arboriculture and architecture that follows the flow of natural spaces, shunning the curated symmetry of French or Italian gardens. English gardens are often grand in scope, and this World Heritage Site is no exception at 36,000 acres. The park even includes a castle, plus dozens of other buildings and bridges for its million-plus yearly visitors to discover. Shown here is the wrought-iron Agnes Bridge framing the Venus Temple, one of numerous neoclassical structures in the park.
