A vast past pantry
Fez, Marrakesh, Rabat, and this city, Meknes, constitute the Imperial Cities of Morocco, the nation's four historical capitals. Meknes had its brief turn from 1672 to 1727, when Sultan Ismail Ibn Sharif fortified it as his seat of rule, centered on an imposing kasbah. Adjoining the kasbah's grounds are the weathered ruins of the Heri es-Swani, expansive grain silos that once supplied the city and now stand as a mazelike monument to a moment in Morocco's past.
