Iceland aglow

Like most Icelandic landmarks, this series of short waterfalls boasts incredible beauty as well as a tongue-twister name: Kirkjufellsfoss. It's less tricky when you break it down: 'Kirk' means church, 'fell' means mountain, and 'foss' means waterfall, summing up to 'church mountain waterfall.' Between the falls and the distant Atlantic rises the church mountain itself, Kirkjufell, piercing the sky like a cathedral spire. Though there's no official tally, Kirkjufell is considered the most photographed mountain in Iceland (of course, Kirkjufellsfoss often makes a cameo appearance). This 1,500-foot peak is used to being a standout: During the Ice Age it was a nunatak, or glacial island, its summit untouched by the encroaching ice all around it.
