California farmin'
Much as we think of agriculture as an asset of the United States' heartland, a whole lot of it takes place out here on the West Coast. We're seeing a bird's-eye shot of farm fields in the Sacramento Valley. Home to the state's bustling yet off-the-tourist-path capital, this verdant valley is just one slice of a larger one: the enormous Central Valley sandwiched between California's coastal mountain ranges and the Sierra Nevada. And 'sandwiched' is just the right word, considering this massive fertile basin might be the source of your lunch. Anchored by the Central Valley, California's farming industry produces more than half the United States' fruits, vegetables, and nuts.
