Rhinos on the rise

Even silhouetted in early-morning savanna mists, our big-nosed buddy here is one of the most unmistakable animals on Earth. One of five extant rhinoceros species, the white rhino historically populated a large portion of southern Africa, with a northern faction living as far away as Sudan. By the mid-to-late 20th century they were reduced to small numbers and mainly concentrated in South Africa, but conservationists have reintroduced them to former stamping grounds like Zimbabwe, Botswana, and here in Namibia. Thanks to these efforts, more than 17,000 southern white rhinos make their home in the wild—more than the other four rhino species combined.
