An island sanctuary
Though its full designation is the Catedral-Basílica de Santa María de Mallorca, this landmark of the Balearic Islands' capital is more often called Palma Cathedral. The city of Palma's 438,000-plus locals shorten the name further still, preferring the two-syllable La Seu (Catalan for 'the seat,' from the same Latin root as the Holy See). By any name long or short, the cathedral and its neatly rowed Gothic spires are one of the most famous sights of Mallorca, and that's just the view from outside. Step inside the sanctuary and you'll be treated to the grandeur of a 145-foot-high nave, illumined in rich color by the second-largest rose window in the world.
