A diverse delta
The Gediz Delta is one of the largest wetlands in Türkiye and one of its 14 Ramsar sites, recognized for its high biodiversity. During the winter, it provides a rich habitat for as many as 80,000 birds from hundreds of species. The most multitudinous is Phoenicopterus roseus, shown here in a flock of several dozen wading the delta's waters. Known more familiarly as greater flamingos, the spindly, pinkish-white flyers rule the roost in this riverine land, with around 15,000 breeding pairs calling the Gediz region home.
