Tanagers are the second-largest bird family in the world, making up about 4% of all bird species, but most types of tanager are endemic to particular regions of Central and South America. The green-headed tanager's only home is here in the Atlantic Forest, a vast bioregion stretching from Brazil into corners of Paraguay and Argentina. Thanks in part to protected reserves and corridors, birdwatchers can spot these dazzling flyers throughout the forest—often even in city parks and gardens.
