The unusual breed of cattle, known as the Belted Galloway, was developed in the Scottish Galloway area. These resilient and adaptable creatures are renowned for their distinctive appearance, calm demeanor. The exact origin of their white band is unknown, but many believe that the all-black Galloway cattle was cross-bred with Dutch Lakenvelder cattle—also belted—in the seventeenth century. While these cattle are traditionally Scottish, they are now globetrotters, having been exported to many other countries including Australia, Brazil, Canada, New Zealand and the United States.
