Northern pygmy owl perched on a branch, Cypress Mountain, British Columbia, Canada
This little owl is native to Canada, the United States and Mexico. But don't be fooled by its size. Despite the owl's small stature, it is an aggressive hunter, frequently preying on birds and mammals larger than itself. The northern pygmy owl can also be mistaken for having eyes in the back of its head, as they sport two dark patches on the back of the neck. These ‘false eyes’ can help it evade predators and protect the owl's true yellow eyes.
