Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument spans more than 350 square kilometres of the rugged North Woods, where quiet ponds mirror the sky and dense forests seem to swallow sound. Established in 2016, the monument preserves a landscape once shaped by logging that is now gradually returning to a more natural state. Spruce and birch woodlands provide habitat for moose, black bears and elusive Canada lynx, while clear streams support wild brook trout. Look west and you may catch a glimpse of Mount Katahdin rising beyond the trees. Stay after sunset and the night sky steals the show—designated an International Dark Sky Sanctuary, the monument offers some of the darkest night skies in the eastern United States, with countless stars shining above the forest.
