Spectacled bear resting in tree, Ecuador
The spectacled bear, also known as the Andean bear, is the only South American bear of the Ursidae family. Inhabiting the northern and central Andes Mountains, it dwells primarily in forested areas and feeds mainly on shoots and fruit. Pale markings around the eyes often resemble eyeglasses, or 'spectacles,' giving the species its distinctive name.
This animal is an excellent climber and spends much of its time in trees, sometimes building platforms from branches on which to feed or rest. Its diet is mainly vegetarian, consisting of fruit, leaves and other plant matter, although it may also eat insects or small animals. Generally shy and solitary, it tends to avoid contact with humans. The IUCN considers spectacled bear vulnerable due to habitat loss, hunting and other human pressures. Safeguarding it means protecting a living treasure of the Andes and ensuring that this gentle forest guardian continues to thrive.
