Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Bavaria, Germany
Rothenburg ob der Tauber, a charming town in Bavaria, is one of the most beautiful medieval cities in Europe. The well-preserved half-timbered houses, narrow streets, churches and city walls will give you the feeling of having stepped into a time machine.
The history of Rothenburg dates back to the 13th century when it was a thriving trading centre. Today, the city is known worldwide for its vibrant Christmas market, but one of the most interesting features of this city is 'The Master's Potion'. It is a historical spectacle that celebrates the legend of Mayor Georg Nusch, who saved Rothenburg from destruction in 1631. Johann Tserclaes of Tilly, who had besieged the city, decided, after the citizens begged for mercy, that if someone could drink an entire wine barrel in one go, he would free the city. Mayor Georg Nusch accepted the challenge and became a hero! To this day, this event, which takes place on the Pentecost weekend, is a popular cultural festival.
