Where history comes alive. Old Fortress, Corfu, Greece
Standing proud on the tip of a rocky peninsula, the Old Fortress of Corfu in Greece is currently home to the Public Library and the Archives of the Prefecture of Corfu. Boasting a rich history dating back to the Byzantine period (330 BCE- 1453), the Republic of Venice built this imposing fortress to protect the ancient town of Corfu from enemies. During the 6th century, invaders attacked Corfu, prompting the survivors to build a new village surrounded by a fortress. Construction began during the Byzantine period, but they changed the structure during Venetian rule to create a shield against the Ottomans. Over centuries, this Greek landmark has witnessed the region undergo tremendous change, including the rise and fall of mighty empires.
