The Maasai Mara houses a variety of wildlife, including one of its most iconic inhabitants - the wildebeest. Wildebeests are also referred to as gnus and are native to certain parts of Africa. There are two distinct species, which are differentiated by their physical appearance: black wildebeests and blue wildebeests. These social animals often form large herds that can number in the thousands.
Wildebeests migrate from the Serengeti to the Maasai Mara in search of water and greener pastures. The wildebeest migration typically starts in January or February, when the calving season begins. The nomadic gnu stay at Maasai Mara until November and play a vital role in stabilising the ecosystem. Tourists flock to the Maasai Mara to witness this incredible natural spectacle.
