With a view like this, you may wonder why people ever left this place, rendering it a ghost town. Still, the expansion of the American West left more than a few abandoned settlements in its wake. Here in southwestern Colorado, the town of Alta was part of the silver mining boom. But unlike nearby Telluride, this location was simply evacuated after the boom turned bust.
