A grey squirrel peeking out of its den
The grey squirrel tends to use twigs to make a nest in a tree, much like a bird. But some, like the squirrel in our photo, take the easy route and build a bunk inside the hollow of a tree instead. Since these squirrels don’t hibernate, they need to store food to sustain them through the winter. So, they bury food in arbitrary locations throughout their foraging range – a behaviour called scatter-hoarding.
