Also called snow monkeys, Japanese macaques live further north than any other non-human primate, with thick fur providing plenty of insulation to survive their homeland's snowy winters. But those living around Jigokudani Monkey Park have found a different source of warmth: hot springs, known here as onsen. It's said that in the 1960s, someone tossed an apple to a monkey that chased it into an onsen. Rather than bound back out with the apple, the monkey stayed put for a steamy soak, and soon others crowded in for a quick break from the cold. Nowadays, visitors can see monkeys of all ages enjoying the onsen daily all through the winter (and those of us at home can join the fun via webcam).
