Of rocks and resorts

Just off the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, jagged rock formations stand in stark relief to the tranquil waters of Samaná Bay. The contrast of rugged and relaxed sums up the vibe here in the Greater Antilles. The bay features wildlife preserves and luxury resorts alike—places with nary a soul in sight as well as bustling beach communities. Some islets in the bay host frigatebird and pelican nesting grounds. Other islands—such as the one we glimpse beyond the rocks in our image, Cayo Levantado, are made up almost entirely of resort properties.
