A princely province

This province may be Canada's smallest, but it sure stands out against the clear blue Gulf of St. Lawrence. The soil and sandstone of Prince Edward Island has an earthy red color because it's full of iron oxide, better known as rust. That might not sound appetizing, but the island's top-grade spuds, sold all over Canada, speak for themselves. The red landscape also recalls the ginger hair of a local literary heroine: Anne of Green Gables, whose creator Lucy Maud Montgomery grew up here in Cavendish.
