Hogging the spotlight

It'd be awfully tempting to cuddle this cute little critter, spines and all, but we'd better let this wild hog be. If you're lucky enough to live in the parts of Asia, Africa, and Europe where hedgehogs roam natively, finding one in your flowerbed can be a great sign. Hedgehogs snuffle through underbrush to feed on insects and other tiny pests, helping to keep plants healthy. Startle one while it's scavenging and you'll see it roll into a defensive ball like this—though since hedgehogs also sleep curled up, it's just as likely we woke this one from a nap.
