The karst formations known by the Malagasy term 'tsingy' are found in multiple locations in Madagascar. But nowhere except here, near the island's northern tip, will you find them in these Mars-like colors. The Tsingy Rouge, or Red Tsingy, is formed from compressed, clay-rich earth that's been slowly eroded to form strange, shroudlike figures. Remarkable as it is, relatively few tourists visit the Tsingy Rouge—seeing it in person takes a four-wheel-drive vehicle and a penchant for hiking in dry, dusty heat.
