Elevated aromas

Sights more than make up for smells here on the shores of this Bolivian saline lake. The sulfur-laden Laguna Hedionda (translating to 'stinking lake') lies above 13,500 feet on the Altiplano of the Andes, near the foot of the volcano Ollagüe. In contrast to its great elevation, Hedionda's depth is less than a foot on average, so even if you hold your nose, don't expect to do the backstroke on this backcountry water body. Time your visit right, though, and you'll see flocks of flamingos and other wallowing waterfowl.
