Motion in the ocean
The name Kaikōura comes from the Māori word for a local ocean delicacy: southern rock lobster, also known as crayfish or kōura. The seafood catch here is indeed plentiful, as are opportunities to see massive marine wildlife like sperm whales and orcas. Even more popular are Kaikōura's dusky dolphins, who gather by the hundreds and impress crowds with their acrobatics.
