Phu Prao phosphorescence
While the province of Ubon Ratchathani in northeast Thailand is renowned for its abundance of natural beauty, one of the more spectacular sights is a glowing tribute to human creativity. Visit Wat Sirindhorn Wararam Phu Prao (or Phu Prao Temple) during the day and you'll find a Buddhist temple combining traditional Thai and Lao architecture, as well as breathtaking views from its hilltop perch above the Mekong River. Stick around after sunset for the lightshow: Phosphorescent paint, after absorbing the day's sunshine, radiates blue and green glows in swirling designs. On the ground are spirals, vines, and floral motifs, and on the side of the temple itself is the central artwork—a large and lustrous Tree of Life.
