Silhouetted stacks
Not far from the westernmost point in Oregon, Bandon Beach is home to one of the most eclectic sea stack assortments on the 362-mile Oregon Coast. Made of volcanic basalt exposed by geologic uplift and sculpted by wave erosion, the stacks come in all shapes and sizes here—from the twisting Wizard's Hat (this photo's main subject) to the distant Cat and Kittens Rock (partly visible on the horizon) to the looming, 72-foot-tall Face Rock. Run out of stone shapes to count? Look to the sands: From April to August, a local nonprofit called Circles in the Sand draws elaborate labyrinths on the beach each morning.
