The 36 states and territories of India are subdivided into around 800 different districts, and Kutch, in the western state of Gujarat, is the largest. Its name, also spelled Kachchh, means a land that alternates between wet and dry stages, such as the Rann of Kutch that makes up much of the district. Outside of the summer monsoon season, riverine features like the Kadiya Dhro gorge in our photo typically dry up. Also known as 'India's Grand Canyon,' Kadiya Dhro draws visitors whether or not its stream is flowing—but when it is, take care if you're tempted with a swim, as crocodiles have been spotted in the murky flow.
