Welcome to Tadrart Rouge, a swath of the Algerian Sahara noted for its iron-rich red sands. This remote area is a favorite among off-road enthusiasts, and you'll often see 4x4 tracks weaving through towering dunes and surreal rock formations. Long before these adventurers arrived, the area was something of an arts district: Prehistoric petroglyphs number in the thousands here, chronicling the civilization that once flourished in this section of the Sahara. Most of these drawings date back to the Green Sahara era, and depict wildlife like giraffes and elephants that thrived here before the rivers ran dry.
