A modern twist on the triangular truss bridge accents a city known for a high-flying pastime. The Atal Pedestrian Bridge in Ahmedabad, India, was designed in homage to the colorful traditional kites flown here on Makar Sankrānti, an Indian public holiday held each January to mark winter's end. Here in Gujarat state, the celebration is known as Uttarayana: a two-day bash that locals spend months preparing for, featuring mass kite flights, kiting competitions, and other kite-centric events. As Gujarat's biggest city, Ahmedabad hosts the International Kite Festival, drawing kite flyers from across the globe to decorate the skies.
