Buffalo in Belgium?
It's believed that the city of Ghent got its name from an old Celtic word for 'confluence,' and that description is especially appropriate today. When Stone Age people first settled the area, two rivers met here, now called the Scheldt and the Lys. Millennia of human modification later, Ghent is intercut with an intricate network of countless canals. Of course, with many watercourses comes the need for many bridges—more than 250 of them. This one, the cable-stayed Ottergem Bridge, spans the Ringvaart (a sort of uber-canal connecting most of the city's waterways) next to the home stadium of soccer club K.A.A. Gent. Since the team's nickname is the Buffalos—in homage to an early-1900s visit by Buffalo Bill's Wild West show—the bridge is popularly called the 'Buffalo Bridge.'
