When it was founded in 1930, the Adler Planetarium was the only planetarium in the Western Hemisphere. Surrounded on three sides by Lake Michigan's expanse, it's one of a famous trio of educational institutions here on Chicago's Museum Campus. Also included: the Shedd Aquarium, opened just weeks after the Adler as one of the first-ever inland aquariums, and the Field Museum, the city's renowned natural history museum built for the 1893 World's Fair. And if three Windy City treasures on one stretch of lakefront weren't enough, another of Chicago's hallowed halls is right around the corner: Soldier Field, home of Da Bears.
