One Superior spot
Devil's Island stands out among the 22 Apostle Islands, and not only because its impish name contrasts with the archipelago's pious title. The moaning and thundering of waves within its Lake Superior-lapped caves may be the origin of the island's name: It's said that the local Ojibwe people once warned of evil spirits haunting the limestone hollows. If that doesn't frighten you off, you can rent a kayak to explore the isle's ins and outs. Or, if you visit in wintertime and the ice is solid enough, you can hike or snowshoe out for a close-up of the massive icicles that form here.
