One cool bird
It can get a little muggy in the rainforests of central Brazil. Luckily, toco toucans like our pal here boast built-in air conditioners: their beaks. If you thought that ample honker was only for attracting mates, think again—it's also a radiator capable of cooling the bird's blood. A toucan's bill has many blood vessels that pass close enough to the outside air to lower its overall body temperature. The toucan even regulates flow to the bill at will, widening blood vessels to cool off more quickly when it's extra balmy out. Wish your schnoz could do that? Well, wish carefully—a toucan's surface area is as much as 50% beak, so you may find yourself suddenly top-heavy.
