Despite the greenery-covered isles and cerulean waters, there's nothing tropical about these islands, but they certainly don't lack for sunshine. At least not this time of year, when the big, bright ball in the sky doesn't set for 69 days straight. As you've probably guessed, we're witnessing the midnight sun far above the Arctic Circle. Given its northerly position, the island of Sommarøy is less frigid than you'd expect, averaging just under 4.4 degrees Celsius over the year. Of course, local islanders pay for the mild weather and those many days of sunny rays with a winter that brings months of darkness.
