It's no wonder Monte Fitz Roy is a world-renowned symbol of South America and a national treasure here in Argentina. From any angle, even upside-down in the silvery surface of Lake Capri, it just looks awesome. Of course, some aren't content to look and not touch. In early 1952, Frenchmen Lionel Terray and Guido Magnone became the first mountaineers to climb Fitz Roy. The following decade, the 'Californian' route was established by a group of climbing buddies that included founders of both The North Face and Patagonia. A few climbers have even conquered Fitz Roy free solo (without ropes or equipment), starting with American daredevil Dean Potter in 2002. As for us, we're dizzy enough just seeing the summit from here.
