A symbol of solidarity and hope

Ever since lockdowns and social distancing measures have been in effect, images of rainbows have turned up in neighbourhoods across the world as a symbol of hope. Pictured here is the Jacques Cartier Bridge lit up in rainbow colours to demonstrate solidarity as the nation grapples with the novel coronavirus. An emblem of the Greater Montreal area, the lights on this bridge traditionally switch to one colour each month. Valérie Plante, the Mayor of Montréal called the display a demonstration of ‘hope, resilience and solidarity of Montréalers.’

In addition to the Jacques Cartier Bridge in Montréal, many iconic landmarks across Canada have been lit up to show strength and unity. Just like the display of rainbows and a nightly applause, several buildings across Canadian cities have lit up room lights in the shape of a heart as part of the growing movement to show gratitude to our healthcare and front-line workers battling the coronavirus pandemic.
