The Esplanade Riel bridge opened in 2003 and was designed by architect Etienne Gaboury. The bridge provides a link between Winnipeg’s French Quarter and the recreational area of The Forks. Given its unique design, this bridge is recognized as a visual symbol in Manitoba’s capital. The name was picked through a contest held in the Franco-Manitoban community and was chosen in honour of Louis Riel, the Metis leader who co-founded the province of Manitoba.
