King penguins at Volunteer Point, Falkland Islands
If the other team doesn’t show, that’s an automatic forfeit. In the meantime, marvel at the king penguin’s ability to dive to depths of more than 90 metres into the frigid waters of the Southern Ocean. It dives to pursue the squid and lanternfish that are primary parts of its diet. And when prey is scarce, the king can dive even deeper in its search for food. Researchers have spotted king penguins as far as 300 metres below the surface. That’s deep!
