A butterfly’s best friend. Tulip festival Ottawa
The Canadian Tulip Festival begins today and will welcome visitors through May 22nd. This highly anticipated event will take place in Commissioner Park, Ottawa and marks the arrival of spring. People come in huge numbers to witness the stunning display of colourful tulip blooms. This mega festival carries along a lot of history—it began in 1953 and has since then been an epitome of the friendship between Netherlands and Canada.
This cherished tradition dates back to World War II, when the members of the Dutch royal family took refuge in Ottawa. To show their gratitude toward the hospitality of Canadians, the family sent back thousands of tulip buds. Malak Karsh, the renowned photographer, suggested the idea of this festival. This festival celebrates not only the beauty of tulips but also the multiculturism and diversity that Canada possesses.
