Red lanterns, China
Chinese lanterns have a long history dating back thousands of years. They are a symbol of Chinese culture, especially in times of celebration. Hanging lanterns are common during festivals as they are said to bring good luck. Red lanterns represent prosperity and are very popular during the Lantern Festival, which traditionally marks the end of the Chinese New Year celebrations. Homes and businesses across cities, including here in Chengdu, the capital of south-west China’s Sichuan province, are decorated in beautiful lanterns of all shapes and sizes, often in the traditional red silk with gold trim.
