International Women’s Day. A woman’s will...
Today we celebrate the International Women's Day, which we have chosen to illustrate with this mural of Frida Kahlo, painted on the front of an apartment building in Mexico City. If Frida Kahlo is well known for her formidable artistic talent, her political and societal commitments are less widely reported outside the Mexican borders. And yet, the strength of character displayed by this woman through her extraordinary tenacity and courage is well worth telling. Her work, imbued with oneirism and remarkable poetry, underlines the incomparable power of artistic creation in the face of adversity.
Kahlo's work has been celebrated internationally as emblematic of Mexican national and indigenous traditions and by feminists for what is seen as its uncompromising depiction of the female experience and form.
