Jaisalmer is built on a ridge of yellow sandstone, which more-or-less lends itself to every aspect of the town. It is often referred to the ‘Golden City’ for this reason. The town is crowned by the famous Jaisalmer Fort, which is also hugely made-up of the yellow sandstone. Satyajit Ray’s ‘Sonar Kella’ was filmed at Jaisalmer Fort. The city itself is now a World Heritage Site.
